The Amsterdam Project

The Amsterdam, a trading ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) beached at Bulverhythe on the East Sussex coast in January 1749. Before her cargo could be salvaged, the ship sank into quicksand at a dynamic and environmentally sensitive point on the Sussex shoreline; the wreck revealed only occasionally.

This project will raise public awareness of the Amsterdam and illuminate its historical, social, environmental, and economic significance to Sussex through targeted research, community-centred data gathering, and a programme of talks, tours, and learning activities in Hastings and Bulverhythe. Alongside this will be a feasibility study exploring the viability, impact, and implications of a major site-specific installation planned for 2027–30.

R&D will run until April 2027 aligned with the Hastings Shipwreck Museum’s 40th anniversary in July 2026.

MSL has created an AV work, with sound and visual artists and professional performers working with participants from the Seaview Project. A concept trailer of this can be viewed below.
